Rolex usually plays things right down the middle in terms of design. Being Rolex, they are always improving the watch case, the movement, the movement lubrication, the bracelet clasp, etc.. The stainless steel watch models have always been utilitarian. The steel and gold watches have always been a blend of practicality and elegance. The solid 18k gold watches have always been luxurious. On this particularly RARE GMT Master II, however, Rolex through a most delightful curveball in the form of a glorious pave diamond dial on an otherwise normally outfitted model 116718. Not over the top like a SARU, this watch is PERFECT!.
Case is 18k with dimensions of 40mm diameter by 12.2mm thick. Massive trip-lock screw down crown (a huge improvement for the GMT in my opinion). Ceramic bezel (scratch resistant and color will not fade over time). Extra thick crown guards and lugs. Much improved clasp on the solid 18k Oyster bracelet (with polished center links). Bi-directional 24 hour bezel. Case is water resistant to 100 meters.
Dial is factory pave diamond with applied luminous hour markers and black hands also filled with luminous. Black 24 hour hand. Date at 3 o’clock.
Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 3185 with 31 jewels, Parachrome Blue Breguet balance spring, and balance with microstella regulating screws. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.
