Description
The Royal Oak is of royal lineage, what with Audemars Piguet collaborating with Gerald Genta, how could a star not be born? Indeed a star was born when Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak in the 1970s. It is the first luxury sports watch and a design icon.
Not surprisingly, and to no one’s surprise, Audemars Piguet has made almost innumerable versions of the Royal Oak by now. However, this early never polished 18k skeleton version with original diamond hands is, for sure, one of the rarest and most interesting.
The Royal Oak is all about its case, which includes the integral bracelet. The octagonal bezel with its exposed structural screws, is supposed to be reminiscent of a ship’s porthole window. The Royal Oak case is a sculpted masterpiece, with many beveled edges and alternating between mirror and brush finished surfaces. This particular 18k case has never been polished and is in immaculate condition. Case is 39mm wide by a very thin 8.5mm. Sapphire front and display back crystals.
Being a skeleton watch, there is no dial. Instead, the wearer gets to enjoy a front and back view of the finely hand decorated movement. The hands have diamonds inlaid, which not only looks fantastic, but also improves legibility. Gorgeous! Really and truly.
Movement is the automatic winding Audemars Piguet Caliber 2120 with 36 jewels and a skeletonized and decorated 21k winding rotor. You will not find a better made, more finely finished and decorated movement than this.
Bracelet is the standard, tapering, 18k Royal Oak bracelet with invisible but for the safety button clasp. Bracelet has zero stretch.
This is a never polished, rare treasure.
