Description
The Tri-Compax from Universal Geneve is as iconic as its MUCH more expensive cousins from Rolex and Patek Philippe, but at literally a fraction of the price. This model, with its original black bezel, even looks like a complicated Daytona.
This last generation, black dial configuration of the model 881101/2 Universal Geneve Compax is known by collectors as the “Reverse Panda”, since it is significantly rarer than the silver dial version. This is an all-original, fantastic looking, sporty complicated chronograph, and a legendary collector’s watch. Prices are rising fast and one look explains why.
Universal Geneve debuted the Tri-Compax at the 1944 Basel Watch Show. The model remained in production through the 1970s. The movement in these watches is a high grade chronograph caliber matched with calendar functions and with column wheel construction. Quality wise, these watches are the equals to the Rolex Jean-Claude Killy models.
This watch has the sportiest case version with massive screw on steel case back. 36mm steel case with the famous twisted lugs, pump style chronograph pushers, signed original crown and relatively clean and original black tachymetre bezel. Compared to most surviving black bezel models of this watch, this bezel is very clean. Plastic crystal.
Original untouched black dial with intact original luminous plots and original hands. The Tri-Compax name came from the three chronograph subdials located at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock but the watches actually have four subdials. At 3 o’clock is the chronograph minutes totalizer with long hash marks for the first three increments of 3 minutes. 6 o’clock is the chronograph 12 hour totalizer. 9 o’clock is running seconds. 12 o’clock is date and moonphase. In addition, there are apertures for day and month.
The Caliber 281 is the last of the movements used in the Tri-Compax and the most refined. Featuring column wheel construction, this movement is clean and running.
Watch is on complementary strap with steel buckle.
