Description
This is in the Top 10 of the most impressive watches I have ever seen. Someone turned the light on over the heads of the designers at Breguet. Yes, the esteemed first-tier Swiss firm has always made great watches, but this watch is, creatively, head and shoulders above Breguet’s other offerings.

First of all, functionally, this is an alarm watch. But that’s not what makes this watch spectacular. The insanely cool aspect of this watch, is HOW the alarm sounds. It chimes “The Thieving Magpie” by Gioachini Rossini, the Italian composer active in the early 1800s and most famous for composing “The Barber of Seville”. Not only does the watch chime out this song, THE DIAL SPINS AROUND while the chime is working. It’s just awesome!

Case is a whopping 48mm of 18k white gold, with musical notes in relief on the case sides. Sapphire crystal. Case back is engraved “BREGUET” “La Gazza Ladra” “Gioachino Rossini” along with the 7800 reference number and the watch’s serial number. La Gazza Ladra is Italian for The Thieving Magpie. Stanley Kubrick used excerpts from this composition to chilling effect in A Clockwork Orange. How wild is that? The two crowns on the right side of the case set the time and wind the chime mechanism. The two buttons on the left case side, play and turn on and off the chime.

Dial of this watch is just as impressive as the rest of it. Breguet is famous for their guilloche decoration. This is the first time I see this engraving pattern, which radial swirling and looks very three dimensional. In fact, it appears like a topographical map of a mountain range! The outer rim of the dial is silvered gold, concentrically brush finished, with black roman numerals and outermost minutes chapter dots. The aperture at 3 o’clock is a power reserve display for the chime mechanism. The aperture between 9 o’clock and 10 o’clock indicates that the alarm chime is off or on (by the presence of a musical note). Hands are blued pomme hands and the alarm hand has the Treble Clef at the bottom.

Automatic winding Breguet Caliber with 55 hour power reserve, 59 jewelsand 633 individual parts. This movement is overflowing with innovation and inventions, engineered specifically for this watch. Starting with silicon escapement and balance mechanism, the movement also makes use of magnetism in its chiming/striking mechanism. Normally, magnetism is the enemy of watch movements (as is friction, which the silicon negates). Breguet’s watchmakers came up with the revolutionary idea to USE magnetism, working on the principal of eddy currents, also known as Foucault currents, to overcome the problem of friction in the striking system. Naturally, to create the melody, there is a music box mechanism inside the movement as well.

Black hand sewn crocodile Breguet strap with 18k white gold Breguet deployment clasp.

Watch is new with box and papers.
