Description
Produced from 1948 through 1960, only about 150 of these so-called "Banana" watches were ever made. Featuring case with flared sides and rectangular movement. Patek ceased manufacturing rectangular, or "formed" movements in the 1960s. This rare and desirable watch is in mint condition.
Rectangular and other eccentrically shaped wristwatches were particularly popular through the 1940s, before round watches really dominated the market in the 1950s. The mark of an elite non-round watch is its “formed” movement, which is to say that the shape of the movement corresponds with the shape of the case, as does this Patek Philippe Caliber 9-90 with 18 jewels and stamped with the Geneva Seal.
Case is roughly rectangular with concave sides and dimensions of 43mm long by 22mm wide at its narrowest point by 10mm thick. From the side, you can observe that the case is flat on the bottom and highly domed. Acrylic crystal conforms with the domed shape.
Not surprisingly, a lot of work went into making these kinds of watches. Furthermore, it is not surprising that these watches are highly collectable.
Original untouched silvered dial with applied arabic numerals and golden feuille style hands. Subsidiary seconds dial. Dial has some aging, which does not detract from the watch at all.
Watch is on modern, unworn Patek Philippe strap.
