Description
Weeks of work are required to skeletonize the automatic movement in this watch, according to Patek. This is only the beginning, as the movement in this masterpiece is not only skeletonized, it is also completely hand decorated, hand finished and hand assembled. Patek calls this movement “a fantastic stage for the ballet of rotating brass wheels” and notes “By affording a fascinating glimpse into the microcosm of hours, minutes, and seconds, it not only captivates the owner with an extravagant setting but also delivers metaphoric insights into the unfathomable fleetingness of time.” I don’t think I can improve on this, so let’s get to the facts.
Because of the incredibly labor intensive production of the 5180, Patek has made very few of them. I have seen practically every modern skeleton watch in existence, and this Patek skeleton stands out in terms of what they have achieved with the movement. The entire movement is built on a single plain, along with the micro-rotor. The spring barrel is visible between 1 o’clock and 2 o’clock and has a Patek Calatrava Cross logo overlaid on it, around which is engraved PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE.
Case and bracelet are 18k white gold and watch is 39mm in diameter and an astounding 6.65mm thin. For an automatic winding watch, this is absolutely incredible. Domed front sapphire crystal and flat display back sapphire crystal, with subtle blue tinting around the display back’s periphery. The movement is secured by the 12 spokes, which also serve as hour markers for the blued feuille hands. Note that the crown stem passes through the 3 o’clock spoke.
This watch is all about the movement, afterall, which is a completely hand worked automatic ultra-thin Patek Philippe Caliber 240 SQU, fully rhodiumed, with 27 jewels and 159 individual components. Micro-rotor is 22k and provides a maximum of 48 hours of power reserve.
Bracelet is original 18k white gold Patek with beads of rice style construction and double folding deployment clasp. Bracelet is very supple.
The bottom line is that this Patek Philippe skeleton watch is an amazing timepiece and you can literally see the quality and artisanship that goes into it. Definitely one of Patek’s finest timepieces.
