Spectacular is an understatement for this watch. Rolex “President” watches in the 1970s were always 18k and they are abundant. The Datejust model, however, was invariably stainless steel or “two tone” meaning 18k and steel. An 18k Datejust is rare. What makes this watch over the top is the dial, which we have named most affectionately “Stratocaster” Vignette. The color pattern matches the finish on an original vintage Fender Stratocaster of the 1960s. What’s more, the 18k case has abundant patina, which is very pleasing to the eye of an experienced collector. Original 18k gold case is 36mm with screw down crown and plastic crystal. Case is very crisp with rich patina all over. Serial number 3769XXX dates production to 1972. Original untouched Vignette dial, which started life as red but has softened in tone to its current color. This is literally the nicest vignette dial we have ever seen. It looks just like the Sunburst finish on a vintage Fender (which we also collect). Rolex automatic winding Caliber 1570 movement with 26 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions. The 1570 is the finest mass produced automatic winding movement ever, keeping chronometer time for several lifetimes. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Movement is pristine and running. Custom leather strap with Rolex buckle. This is a special watch and just stunning on the wrist.
