Description
No crown guard Submariners, which have come to be called “James Bond” Subs after a famous screen appearance, are by far the most collectable Submariners. Considering that back in the 1950s when Submariners were strictly tool watches worn by divers, the condition of this 6536 is clean and mint.
These Underline dial watches are particularly exciting for collectors. The underline mark was used very briefly and is a witness to a period of time when Rolex watches were undergoing rapid evolution.
Original stainless steel case is in mint condition. Original bezel and original insert. Screw down crown works perfectly. Domed plastic crystal is clean. Case dimensions are 38mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Serial number is not legible. Inside case back has date code of ‘I 57’ which is very early and is marked ‘6536/1’.
Amazing and original Gilt Underline dial with chapter ring and exceptional patina on the hour markers and hands. The Underline mark, beneath “SUBMARINER” was Rolex’s way of indicating that the luminous material on the dial was not radioactive (which is to say not radium).
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 movement with 25 jewels and adjusted to five positions and temperature. Movement has “butterfly” rotor of that period and the movement is clean and running.
Rolex riveted bracelet with ‘2 63’ date code in very clean condition, mint+, with zero stretch.
This mint condition vintage Submariner is a treasure!
