Description
The Patek Philippe reference 530 chronograph is as elusive as it is legendary. It is surely the nicest looking chronograph Patek Philippe has ever made and the most collectable. Although the reference 530 was produced from 1937 until 1962, extremely few watches were made. As usual, yellow gold cases were predominant, while rose gold and steel case versions were a minority of production. Only 14 reference 530 chronographs in rose gold are known to have been sold EVER. This means only a few of these ever come to market, and very infrequently. This watch is in mint+ all-original condition and is exceedingly desirable.
In fact, the 530 is so storied and unobtainable, that Patek Philippe fairly recently introduced the reference 5170 chronograph, which obviously takes its styling cues directly from the 530.
Case is 18k rose gold with square chronograph pushers and perfectly proportioned crown. Crystal is domed acrylic. In the 1950s, when this watch was manufactured, this was a very large watch at almost 37mm diameter. Patek started making the 530 shortly after reference 130 chronograph production commenced, for customers who wanted a larger, more masculine watch than the 33mm reference 130.
Original silver dial with applied golden arabic numerals and rectangular hour markers. Original feuille hands in rose gold, subsidiary seconds dial, 30 minute chronograph totalizer subdial and tachometer scale are also present on the dial. Original blued chronograph hands.
Movement is the manual winding Patek Philippe Caliber 13-130 with 23 jewels, Breguet balance spring, micrometer regulator and with 8 adjustments. This is a column wheel chronograph construction. Movement is pristine and running.
This is the kind of vintage watch that collectors are buying and retiring permanently. As elite watches have become an asset class for shrewdly diversified collectors and investors alike, this Patek Philippe 530 chronograph in rose gold is precisely the type of wristwatch that offers the rare opportunity to own something you can wear, enjoy and also expect significant price appreciation.
