Description
In my opinion, the Portuguese chronographs (still in production) get the credit for launching the popularity of the Portuguese models… by far IWC’s best selling line. The Portuguese model line currently offers 7 day movement models, perpetual calendar models, and other incarnations. But it’s still the chronographs that define the Portuguese.

The 3712-005, this watch, is the split-seconds chronograph with platinum case. Produced in a limited edition of 250, this is by far the rarest of the Portuguese chronographs. In fact, it is rumored that IWC never completed the production, and only ended up making 200 or so watches.

I almost can’t imagine a nicer looking watch than the Portuguese chrono. The dial is silvered and features applied arabic numerals, embossed minutes chapter on the dial, quarter of a seconds chapter on the flange, perfectly proportioned leaf style hands in white gold for the timekeeping and blued hands for the chronograph displays. The dial on this watch is perfectly balanced… and absolutely beautiful.

Solid platinum case is a masculine 41.3mm diameter by 13.2mm thick. The case details are very refined. The top of the lugs, the pump style chronograph pushers, bezel and case back are all mirror platinum, while the case sides are brush finished. Crystal is domed sapphire. The fit and finish is outstanding quality.

Movement is the manual winding IWC split-seconds chronograph Caliber 76240 with 31 jewels and a 44 hour power reserve. IWC does not submit their watches for C.O.S.C. chronometer testing -- but their own in-house timing specifications are even stricter than C.O.S.C.'s.

Watch is in mint condition.
