Description
March 3, 1969 was the day that Breitling, Heuer, Hamilton, Buren and Dubois-Depraz announced they had developed and built the world’s first automatic winding chronograph movement – the Caliber 11 which is the movement inside this watch.
This watch is from circa 1970, which is a good thing because the first production run of Caliber 11 movements was fraught with problems, which the engineers resolved quickly. This movement runs flawlessly.
If you want a vintage watch with wrist presence, this is your watch. At 48mm this wristwatch is a beast and its looks keep up with its size. The condition of this watch is original and mint+. Take a look at the exploded diagram of the Caliber 11. It’s the first and only automatic chronograph movement I have ever seen where the rotor is hidden beneath the chronograph plate. You can hear it, but you can’t see it.
Case is 48mm of never polished never diminished stainless steel with large steel screw-on case back. Bezel is blackened and turns, moving the inner two-color bezel, so the GMT hand can track a second timezone. Crown is at 9 o’clock while the two pump-style chronograph pushers are on the right side of the case. Huge domed acrylic crystal and signed crown. Thickness is 15.6mm.
The original dial, and especially the original hands, are the highlights of this watch for me. The tritium still glows brightly when exposed to UV light. Hands are giant orange while the 24 hour GMT hand is yellow. Two register chronograph set up with 30 minute totalizer near 3 o’clock while the 12 hour totalizer is next to 9 o’clock. Both chronograph subdial hands jump to their next position (versus move slowly). Date window above 6 o’clock with all-red numbers.
Apart from telling you that this movement is both historic and of very unorthodox construction, I can also tell you that it has 17 jewels. I will refer you to the diagram. Fascinating. Movement is clean and running fine.
Strap and buckle are modern and compliment the watch wonderfully.
