Description
The reference 6240 Cosmograph Daytona is the first Rolex chronograph to feature screw down chronograph pushers. Significantly, this watch still has its original first series pushers. It is not a given, as many 6240s have had their original chronograph pushers replaced.
The model 6240 is the rarest Daytona, and was produced from 1965 into 1967, as essentially a prototype for the later models 6263 and 6265 known for their screw down chronograph pushers. At the time of its production, Rolex Daytona watches had (non-screw down) “pump” chronograph pushers and 6240s were unknown to consumers of the period. This watch is from 1965 so from early production.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 14mm thick. Original bezel still features sharp factory edge. Original bezel insert features “Units per Hour” scale from ‘50’ to ‘200’. The screw down crown and screw down chronograph pushers all work perfectly, and the chronograph hands reset crisply to their zero positions. The lugs are symmetrical and uniform with sharp edges. Serial number 1439XXX dates production to 1965. Inner case back has ‘6240’.
Original silver dial with applied hour markers and original hands. The sub dials provide 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph totalizers and constant seconds. The black sub dials are sunken and have concentric guilloche. Intact and original luminous dots. Subtle sunburst brush finish.
Original movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 72B with 17 jewels. The movement features column wheel construction and is clean and in excellent working order.
Rolex riveted Oyster bracelet is very clean and mint with no stretch.
This important vintage Rolex Daytona is in mint+ condition.
