Description
The collectability of Gerald Genta designed watches has reached a feverish level. The Nautilus is chief among them, and this amazing watch offers the very best of what makes collecting vintage watches so compelling. The steel case is never polished. The original cork Nautilus box, very valuable in its own right, is included along with the original papers. The original untouched anthracite dial is going golden brown, headed toward being a cherished “tropical” dial. You could not ask for more from a vintage watch and this watch delivers!

When the Patek Philippe Nautilus originally debuted in 1976, collectors were scandalized at the high retail price for a stainless steel watch. The price was about the same as similar 18k gold watches. Neither Patek nor its customers back then could have foreseen the success the Nautilus would achieve. Gerald Genta achieved fame with this watch.

This is the Jumbo full-size case in stainless steel with dimensions of 41.6mm wide by 44.5mm long by 7.5mm thin (for an automatic watch, this is a thin case). Sapphire crystal. Patek introduced the Nautilus as a sports watch to fill a void in their model line. The case is water resistant to 120 meters. The Nautilus bezel is a design icon.

Both the stainless steel bracelet and case are in never polished condition. Bracelet is integral to the case and has a flip lock safety clasp.

Dial is co-signed Beyer, and is anthracite color, somewhere between blue and grey, untouched and original, with horizontal channeling, applied hour markers, luminous baton hands, and the date at 3 o'clock. As mentioned, you can see the golden areas, meaning this watch is morphing into a prized Tropical dial.

Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 28 255C with 36 jewels, adjusted to 5 positions and heat/cold, and stamped with the Geneva Seal. The movement features a free-sprung balance and an 18k rotor segment for increased winding efficiency.

The Patek Nautilus Jumbo is an important vintage Patek Philippe. It is Patek’s first and best “sports” watch and this timepiece is complete with Patek cork box and original papers.
