Description
The reference 1518 is the original Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph... the inspiration for subsequent models like the references 2499, 3970, 5970 and 5270. It is truly beautiful and it is a very important wristwatch. In fact, the 1518 is the complicated big brother to the Patek perpetual calendar reference 1526. These two models were the first perpetual calendar wristwatches produced in quantity by any firm. This perpetual calendar chronograph went on to inspire countless imitators… but the reference 1518 was the first and is still the archetypal version of this pairing of complications.
Over the fourteen years of 1518 production (1941-1954), Patek made only 281 model 1518 watches. The 1518s were reserved for true Patek VIP clients, and many orders went unfilled.
Original 18k case is mint. Domed acrylic crystal and rectangular chronograph pushers. Dimensions are 35mm diameter, 43.5mm in length from lug tip to lug tip, and 14mm thick.
Original untouched silvered dial with applied golden arabic numerals and dot hour markers. Day and month apertures above the hard enamel "PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE" text and moonphase and date display/scale around the moonphase display. The moonphase disc is a deep blue with golden stars and moon. Hours, minutes, and seconds hands are feuille style and golden, while the chronograph and date hands are blued. Seconds and tachymetre scale at the periphery of dial. The symmetry and beauty of this dial can not be overstated.
Original movement is the manual winding Patek Philippe Caliber 13''' with 23 jewels and adjusted to 8 positions. Movement is pristinely clean, winding smoothly and running perfectly.
Watch is in mint condition on hand-sewn strap with vintage 18k Patek Philippe tang buckle.
