You don't appreciate how great of a watch the IWC "Big Pilot" actually is until you have the chance to try one on your wrist. You can study pictures from the Internet or a watch catalog or magazine all day long, and not have any idea of how nice the watch is in the metal. That's the long and short on this great watch.
Movement is the IWC automatic winding Caliber 51110 with 44 jewels and beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. This movement is 38.2mm in diameter (larger than most watches) and features IWC's proprietary Pellaton winding system. The mainspring will store more power, but IWC's engineers limit the release of power to a 7 day reserve, so that the flow of power does not begin to deviate and adversely affect the running rate of the timekeeping. One thing I have learned about IWC watches over the years, is that the company is serious about engineering - no detail is compromised.
Case is stainless steel with a primarly brush finish, and with dimensions of 46mm diameter by 15.8mm thick. Sapphire crystal. Oversized crown.
Dial is black with highly luminous hour markers and hands. The power reserve subdial is sunken and has a concentric guilloche. Date at 6 o'clock.
Strap is a very thick black leather flieger style with large steel IWC deployant clasp.
