Description
The Rolex Submariner is a testament to progress and commitment. Rolex started making the Submariner in 1954 and has improved it over time with innovations.
Occasionally, when it occurred to them, Rolex would change the model number to convey that the watch had been improved. These so called “transitional” models are rare and interesting.
This 16800 is from 1985. The Submariner 16800 introduced the Caliber 3035 with quick set date, a minor engineering modification but a great convenience to the owner. The 16800 also introduced the dial with the metal "surrounds" for the hour markers and the sapphire crystal.
Lastly, whereas previous Submariners were rated (on the dial) as water resistant to 660 feet, the 16800 was the first Sub to be rated water resistant to 1000 feet.
Unlike the modern era, when Rolex operates their production with almost surgical precision, it wasn’t always so. In fact, the assemblers used to select parts from parts bins and, voila… a watch was born! This 16800 is a text book example of this approach, as it has an original early series 16800 matte style dial despite being made a few years into the 16800’s production run.
The markers have a nice even patina; it’s really a beautiful dial.
Movement is the aforementioned caliber 3035 automatic winding with Breguet spring with free sprung balance, 27 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature and is a C.O.S.C. chronometer.
This is a robust workhorse of a movement designed to take abuse and keep on keeping on.
Case is stainless steel, 40mm diameter, with screw down crown. Bracelet is Rolex Oyster reference 93150 with 10 links.
Overall condition is very good and original throughout, and the dial is untouched, original and perfect.
