Description
The reference 2509 introduced Patek Philippe's earliest water resistant case. The water resistance problem was addressed via the massive screwback, which was a huge functional improvement over the ordinary snap-on caseback. This Calatrava is also quite large for its era at 35mm diameter.
Case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 35mm by 9mm thick. Generously domed acyrlic crystal. Oversized winding crown. Inside the massive screw back is a soft dust cap which not only provides another level of protection from the elements, but also shields the movement from magnetism. Case back has personalized engraving: Helen to Jack 12-25-1954.
Movement is the Patek Philippe manual winding Caliber 12 400 with 18 jewels, hand adjusted to heat, cold and isochronism and in 5 positions and stamped with the Geneva Seal.
Dial is silver with applied golden hour markers and original dauphine hands. Subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o'clock.
New leather strap with Patek tang buckle.
