Description
The Patek Philippe model line up includes several perpetual calendar models. The reference 5059 is the most interesting aesthetically, in my opinion. The dial features both classical elements, like the roman numerals, hands, and minutes chapter at the periphery of the white enamel dial, and also playful elements like the retrograde date and the distribution of the day, month and leap year indicators. The case is also very "sculpted", with case lines which are very clean and quite massive. The case is also hunter-style, and the caseback can be popped open with a flick of the thumb to reveal the sublime Patek Philippe Caliber 315/136.
Case is 18k rose gold, with dimensions of 36mm diameter by 12.8mm thick. Constructed with 4 separate components, the sapphire display back is protected by a hinged solid case back. Slightly domed sapphire crystal in front, while display crystal is flat. Once again, the case lines on the 5059 are interesting - the bezel and case sides are rounded and the crown even has small, protective shoulders which morph into the hunter-caseback, while the lugs are squared on top, while curving downward for wearing comfort (and feature rather massive, exposed screws securing the lugs).
Caliber is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 315/136 with 31 jewels and the prestigious Geneva Seal.
Dial is white over solid gold with printed roman numerals for hours, arabic numerals for date, minutes/seconds chapter at the dial's edge. Dial displays 12 hours time with center seconds, day, date via retrograde display, month, moonphase and leap year. Hands are blackened gold, leaf style and offer excellent legibility.
Strap is hand-sewn crocodile with a Patek deployant clasp.
The 5059 is one of Patek's rarest modern watches, as production of the base caliber is highly limited. Watch is new with box and papers. Retail price for this watch is $69,200.
