Description
The elite Swiss manufactures compete among each other to achieve competitive technical excellence. The ultra thin caliber wars occurred in the 1970s and 1980s, to see who could make the thinnest caliber. Actually, Citizen Watch Co. won the contest (but with a quartz caliber) with a movement (and consequently watchcase) that was so thin, that the watch bent when it was put under any stress (like strapping it on!). A classic example of winning the battle, but losing the war!
Audemars Piguet won the war for thinnest mechanical movement with their Caliber 2003, which is cased in this 18k gold watch. Dating from circa 1980, this watch is a true ultra thin, with dimensions of 31.3mm diameter by 5.5mm thick. Amazingly, the 5.5mm thickness includes a generously domed acrylic crystal!
The movement, the Audemars Piguet Caliber 2003, is only 1.64mm thick with 17 jewels, beating at 18,000 beats per hour and adjusted to 4 positions and temperature.
The dial on this watch is white with printed roman numerals and slender golden needle style hands.
Dial, case and movement are all signed Audemars Piguet and the inside caseback has the 18k 0.750 hallmark.
Watch will be delivered on a generic strap and buckle. Watch is completely original and in excellent running condition.
