Description
This beautiful Baume & Mercier Hampton Spririt automatic was produced in a limited edition of 172 pieces, commemorating 172 years of B&M’s existence.
This particular example features a solid 18k rose gold case, which measures 38 mm x 38 mm (lugs to lugs), excluding the signed crown.
The high-polished case has a slightly cambered profile, which contours very pleasantly to the wrist, due in part also to the black crocodile pattern leather strap, which has been custom shaped and fitted to the lugs, giving the watch and strap the feel and appearance of being fused together. In fact, the strap equals the thickness of the lugs and is basically an extension of the watch, in leather!
Although perfectly square, considering the most outer dimensions of this watch, the thick and domed sapphire crystal is of rectangular shape with 29mm in width x 22 mm tall. The wide-screen aspect of the crystal is just perfect for the drama and presence, which is represented by the stunning dial underneath.
The ultra-white dial features a radial sunburst guilloche pattern, which has a highly dynamic feel to it. The applied rose gold markers, which consist of asymmetrical baton markers, and part numeric, are an extension of the radial and outward directional thrust of the dial, giving the dial and display a “zoom – speed of light in motion” type effect, translating the appearance of this sculpture into a timeless work of art!
I think Baume & Mercier has chosen the design for this model very well, considering its long history and the Zeitgeist of modern esthetics, combined with its classic heritage. A very intriguing and engaging design, indeed!
Completing the dial and its theme are the sharply pointed and beveled dauphine hands, and the asymmetrical date window at 3 o’clock.
The automatic Swiss movement can be partially admired through two cutouts in the caseback, exposing the rotor, and also the mainspring.
Again, the signed B&M strap is black leather with a croc pattern. The massive 18k rose gold tang style buckle is signed B&M and balances perfectly with the overall design and “weight” of this fantastic watch.
This Baume & Mercier Hampton Spirit is in near new condition, at least 95% overall, and is complete with black piano gloss wooden presentation case, outer box, papers, and a book, which takes you through the history of this highly respected company.
