Description
When people think of Chopard watches they conjure an image of the ladies models with the floating diamonds or the popular Mille Miglia model series of sports watches. The LUC models from Chopard are elite watches by anyone's definition. Featuring proprietary, extremely high end manufacture movements, the LUC series watches are right up there with the crème de la crème of the Swiss watch making world. Think Patek Philippe quality.

This is no surprise when the secret of why these watches are so elite is revealed. Michel Parmigiani was the best kept secret in Swiss watchdom for a long time, working on restoring complicated clocks and then moving to wristwatch caliber design and development for the best Swiss houses. In the late 1990s, he started his own eponymous brand: Parmigiani Fluerier. He designed the original LUC calibers for Chopard, who put them in conservatively designed watch cases in precious metals only. Over the years, the LUC designs have gotten more daring (to use a kind word). The earlier designs are true classics, like this LUC 1.96 in 18k white gold.

The 18k white gold case measures 36.5mm diameter by 9.9mm thick, with a sapphire crystal and solid 18k white gold caseback. The case design on this watch is very clean and simple so as not to detract from the beautiful silver dial, which features multi-textured, hand-cut guilloche along with applied white gold tear drop shaped hour markers, gorgeous dauphine hands, subsidiary seconds dial and date display at 6 o'clock.

But wait… the solid caseback has its own surprise. It opens on a tiny hinge to reveal the movement under a pane of sapphire. The inner side of the caseback is engraved with a bee hive, the 18k gold hallmarks, "CHOPARD MANUFACTURE LUC" and a limited edition number of 4X/100. You can read the technical specifications of the movement below and see the picture of it below… but let me comment that this is a beautifully conceived, finished and decorated caliber. But don't take my word for it. All you need to know (and see) is that the movement is engraved with the ultra prestigious Geneva Seal.

Movement is the Chopard in-house Caliber LUC 1.96 which features 32 jewels and beats at 28,800 beats per hour. In addition, the caliber is a mere 3.3mm thin, which is a stunning accomplishment given the fact that there are twin spring barrels, which provide a 65 hour power reserve. Further, the caliber features 22k micro-rotor construction and is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.

Chopard limited production of the LUC watches to 1,860 watches. Since this watch displays a limited edition of 4X out of 100 pieces, it means that they only made 100 LUC 1.96 watches in white gold or this watch was produced as a smaller run and special purpose limited edition watch (but if so, that special purpose is not elaborated or identified).

Watch is in new condition will be delivered with Chopard box and documents.
