Description
Today we had a friend into the office - someone who doesn't know much about watches - and I was showing him sports watches. He was looking to get himself something nice, that he could wear on weekends and/or with casual attire. We went through some Rolexes, some Patek Philippe Nautiluses... the usual suspects. When I pulled out this Royal Oak chronograph in 18k white gold he blurted out "Now that's what I'm talking about!". The Royal Oak is the original luxury sports watch, and this watch in on a strap is really beautiful, while retaining its deep horological bonafides.
The 18k white gold case is very complex, with surfaces that contrast between brushed and polished finishing. Of course, the most characteristic design of the Royal Oak is the octagonal bezel and its visible and functional screws. Screw down crown and chronograph pushers, as well as sapphire crystal give this sport watch a water resistance to 60 meters. Case measures a generous 40mm in diameter by 11.5mm thick. Words really don’t do this watch justice. The case is just gorgeous.
Dial is white with Clous de Paris engraving and luminous hour markers and hands. Chronograph subdials count up to 30 minutes and 12 hours respectively. Date window between 4 and 5 o'clock.
Movement is the tried and true automatic winding Audemars Piguet Caliber 2385 with 37 jewels and power reserve of 40 hours. Audemars Piguet is one of the elite Swiss manufactures and their movements are exemplary aesthetically and mechanically.
Strap is specially treated for water resistance - black Audemars Piguet crocodile with the cool 'AP' shaped 18k white gold deployant clasp.
