Description
By far the rarest reference of all Daytonas, the 6240 is a transitional model that introduced the screw down chronograph pushers case. While the later screw down pusher references 6263 and 6265 abound, the 6240 is a very rare watch. This watch ups the ante with its original two color “Panda” Paul Newman dial.
Incredibly, this watch still has its original Rolex Guarantee booklet along with original purchase receipt dated December 16, 1968 and the original retailer’s store guarantee as well. Van Deusen’s Jewelry in California sold this watch for $245 to the original owner!!
Original case is stainless steel with dimensions of 37.5mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Acrylic crystal. Oversized screw down chronograph pushers and winding crown (all working great). Original bezel has “Units per Hour” scale from ‘50’ to ‘200’. Caseback has some markings, but overall the case is in mint condition.
Inside caseback is stamped ‘6240’.
Serial number 1438XXX dates production to 1965.
Original untouched Paul Newman (also known as “Exotic”) “Panda” dial is white with contrasting black subdials. Original dial and hands are in perfect condition.
Original movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 722 with 17 jewels and adjusted to three positions. This caliber features column wheel construction – by far the superior chronograph caliber construction ever made. Movement is in great condition and is running strong.
Bracelet is early and original to the watch Rolex Jubilee. The sales receipt shows a charge for the bracelet ($20!). Normally, this watch would have been delivered on an Oyster bracelet included in the retail price, but the customer apparently preferred to have the Jubilee and was charged the additional amount.
This is a great, all original and rare vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6240 with original Paul Newman dial. In addition to the documents noted above, the watch will also be delivered with the green chronograph instructions brochure and box.
