Description
How often does a really awesome watch come along, in a platinum case, for less than $20,000? Oh, maybe once in a blue moon! Well, here is such a watch from Germany’s great Glashutte Original with in-house manufacture movement, super handsome black dial, and Glashutte’s unique calendar interface using all-apertures versus the usual subdials that other brands utilize. This approach is much more legible as well.
Solid platinum case is 40mm in diameter by 13mm thick. The heft of this massive platinum case is very pleasing and impressive! Front and display back crystals are sapphire. Crown has an onyx cabochon inset. Strap is black handcrafted Glashutte Original Louisiana Alligator strap with platinum tang clasp.
Movement is the automatic winding Glashutte Original Caliber 100-02 with 59 jewels, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and 7.1mm thick. For readers not aquatinted with movements from Glashutte (the city in Germany, not the brand), there is a movement construction feature called a ≤ plate that Glashutte Original has used in this movement (and all of their others too). The winding rotor is skeletonized and has a 21k gold segment for winding efficiency.
A glimpse through the display back reveals lots of blued screws and rubies. The movement finishing and decoration is the definition of tasteful with wonderful results.
Dial is black with guilloche. Dial features applied hour markers and apertures displaying Day, Month, out-sized Date (which Glashutte Original invented and holds patents for) and Moonphase. The dot below the “Glashutte Original” text displays the leap-year with red, whereas non leap years show as white in this dot.
