Description
Blancpain was one of the brands that positioned themselves perfectly in the 1990s to ride the mechanical watch renaissance wave to extraterrestrial heights. Under the leadership of industry legend Jean Claude Biver, Blancpain offered round watches in gold mostly with moonphase display and proprietary elite movements from F. Piguet (for all intents and purposes Blancpain’s own manufacture movements).

As the mechanical watch emerged from the dark quartz watch decades of the 1970s and 1980s, Blancpain was at the forefront. As nice as the Blancpain product is, they are mostly insider secret type watches. The movements are extraordinarily high quality. The cases are my favorites from all manufacturers and the dials are excellent, if a little understated.

This watch is from the Leman model series, which is also known as the 2100 series, and proves a 100 hour power reserve via two spring barrels in the automatic winding Blancpain Caliber 6763. Dial is white with applied golden hour markers and skeletonized hands. Directly below the “BLANCPAIN” text on the dial are apertures that display day and month. Moonphases display is in the dial cutaway above 6 o’clock and the seconds display is around the moonphase cutaway.

The solid 18k yellow gold watch case is a masterpiece. Starting from the stepped bezel and working down we encounter a large crown inset between two protective shoulders, which in turn are straddled by pusher buttons to set the calendar. On the opposite side of the case “BLANCPAIN” is engraved between two additional setting buttons. The lugs and screw back are massive. While calendar setting buttons used to be a vulnerability for calendar watches, the buttons on this watch are recessed and indeed, the watch is water resistant to 100 meters. Crystal is sapphire.

Strap is medium brown Blancpain crocodile with 18k Blancpain tang clasp. Watch is indiscernible from new and will be delivered with its box and papers. US Retail price is $23,100.
