Description
I could write volumes about the Explorer (also known as the Explorer 1), but I’ll just say that Rolex designed this watch for mountain climbers (it was supplied to the first successful expedition to summit Mount Everest led by Sir John Hunt) and its dial is the quintessence of form following function. To say that it’s legible is an understatement. To say that a vintage Explorer is a piece of art as much as it is a piece of history is about right.
Original stainless steel case measures 35mm diameter by XXmm thick. Acrylic crystal. Water resistant to 100 meters. Screw down crown is working great. Inside case back shows production date of fourth quarter 1967. The serial number 1733XXX confirms 1967 is the year of production.
Original dial is black with printed ‘3’, ‘6’ and ‘9’ and the famous inverted triangle at 12 o’clock. The dial is in mint condition. Original hands.
Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This movement is immaculately clean, running well, and is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.
Watch will be delivered on a medium brown shell cordovan strap with vintage stainless steel Rolex buckle. While only one person will end up owning this watch, everyone should get a shell cordovan strap to wear their vintage Rolex on. Shell cordovan straps are extremely comfortable, highly water resistant, and unlike other straps that deteriorate with wear, shell cordovan straps improve their suppleness with wear.
