Description
For me, the vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with Paul Newman dials is THE king of the vintage kingdom. This watch is not only in mint + all original condition, including of course the 100% original untouched dial, but it also includes the original and complete box and papers set. If you are looking to acquire a genuine Paul Newman Daytona, they don’t get better than this watch right here, right now.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 14mm thick. The case is in mint plus condition. The watch received a service from Rolex Japan in 2002 and obviously has not been worn since, as it is in perfect aesthetic and mechanical condition. The screw down crown and chronograph pushers are working perfectly and the chronograph hands snap back crisply and accurately to their zero positions. The crystal is domed acrylic and is perfectly clear and free of scratches. The original bezel is sharp as a razor’s edge and the original bezel insert with its ‘50’ to ‘200’ Units per Hour scale is very clean and free of scratches.
Original movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 727 with 17 jewels and adjusted to three positions. This is a column wheel construction chronograph caliber, which is acknowledged as the superior design from a mechanical and aesthetic perspective. The movement is in perfect running condition, as one would expect, after its 2002 visit to Rolex.
Original dial is 100% original and untouched. The hands are also original. The dial and hands are in perfect condition. The white “Paul Newman” dial, also known as the “Exotic dial”, is in perfect condition as are the hands. This is a two color dial, which is known as a “Panda” dial. The black subdials provide 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph totalizers and running seconds. The sunken subdials have a concentric guilloche pattern.
Bracelet is the Rolex Oyster reference 78350 with 571 end links. The bracelet has 13 links and will fit up to an 8 inch wrist. The bracelet is in perfect condition.
The watch will be delivered with original Rolex box as well as a highly complete papers set which includes: original Garantie certificate dated November 29, 1973, “Your Rolex” booklet, Translation of the Original Document green translation sheet which was completed by the retailer (Bailey Banks & Biddle) showing the buyer’s name, address and purchase date, Rolex service warranty dated February 2, 1987 and Rolex Japan service receipt dated September 17, 2002.
