Description
The Patek Philippe 3970 is your author’s favorite watch of all time. Patek Philippe was the first company to combine the perpetual calendar and chronograph complications… and while many other watch brands have brought perpetual calendar chronographs to the market since, no one has even come close to Patek Philippe. The 3970 follows in the footsteps of Patek’s earlier perpetual chronos: the references 1518 and 2499, both collectable superstars.
This 3970 E in 18k rose gold is from the first production run of 3970Es; it's a truly historic Patek. The watch is in mint plus condition. On a 3970 case, you need look no further than at the stepped lugs. If the stepped lugs are sharp and chiseled, then you have a superlative example. This is most definitely a superlative example. The hallmarks on these early 3970s are on the outside of the lugs. The case features sapphire crystal and round pump style chronograph pushers. First series 3970s were delivered with solid case backs only, as is the case with this watch. Case dimensions are 36mm diameter by 13mm thick.
The original, untouched first series dial is silver with “obus” style (straight) rose gold hour markers and early production palm hands. Displays are: day and month windows underneath the 12 o'clock hour marker; 24 hour and constant seconds in 9 o'clock subdial; 30 minute chronograph and leap year indicator in the 3 o'clock subdial; moonphase and date in the 6 o'clock subdial.
Movement is the manual winding Caliber 27-70Q with 24 jewels, adjusted for hot and cold, and bearing the Geneva Seal. The movement is in perfect aesthetic and working condition.
Strap is medium brown Patek crocodile with 18k Patek tang clasp.
Finally, the Patek Certificate of Origin is the earlier, smaller size compared to the current certificate.
