Description
One of the most important aspects of deciding on a vintage timepiece is its historical significance. When we came across this rare and oversized Bovet Mono Rattrapante chronograph, we knew it was special; the oversized and beautifully tapered case, the original black gilt dial, the hands, the original lume on the hands and the markers, the overall condition of the watch..
It wasn’t until we engaged the chronograph, however, that we understood that this watch is truly extraordinary, an observation that was confirmed when examined the stunning movement.
This Bovet is a very early, circa 1940’s Mono Rattrapante (Mono Split Seconds ) chronograph in fantastic original condition!
The massive steel case is in mint condition and measures 38 mm 12.5 mm, excluding the crown and pushers. The lugs are nicely tapered and feature holes for easy removal of the spring bars. The satin brushed and polished finish on the steel appears to be original – the metal is impressively intact on the entire watch.
There are several sequences of numbers present on the case back and underneath the lug at the 11-o’clock position. The case back is marked “ 5347 / 5238”, the underside of the top left lug is marked “238” , very likely military issue numbers.
The oversized black 2-register gilt dial is one of the nicest we have seen on any vintage chronograph; it is mint and features an outer tachymeter track and Arabic numerals and the original luminous material. Hands are matching and are original to this watch. This particular style of dial suggests, again, that this might have been an issued military watch.
The manual wind 17 jewel column wheel movement is signed Rensie Watch Co, and features the aforementioned Mono Rattrapante chronograph function which allows the user to to start the chronograph with the top pusher and stop the hand with the bottom pusher in order to get an intermediate “first” reading of the elapsed time while the pusher is still being depressed.
Upon releasing the bottom pusher the hand advances to the actual elapsed time until the bottom pusher is depressed again; if you keep the pusher down, lets, say, for 10 seconds, timing will stop and jump 10 seconds ahead when the pusher is released.
An eccentric and dedicated spring in the movement confirms this function; upon depressing the bottom pusher, the spring will stop moving! The top pusher starts, stops and resets the chronograph, while the bottom pusher gives you the intermittent readings.
Needless to say, the mechanical aspect of this Bovet Mono Rattrapante is fascinating and very useful at the same time. It will be delivered on a brown Horween Shell Cordovan strap with contrast stitching.
If we were to describe this watch in three words, they would be:
“Rare, Beautiful, Important”!
