Description
I should confess, right up front, that I love Michel Parmigiani’s watches. The brand is named Parmigiani Fleurier, which Michel started in the mid 1990s. Most of his watches are cased in this proprietary shape, which is closest to a tonneau shape, but with avant garde oversized claw style lugs. Mr. Parmigiani came to prominence in the watch world for his skill in restoring rare and important clocks, including many in church clock towers. So clearly, the man knows movements, and his entire collection features calibers constructed in the brand’s ateliers.
This is the Kalpa Grande model, which is the brand’s entry level watch. But don’t let that fool you; this is a beautiful watch. You know how sports people always say that this athlete is “pound for pound” the best boxer, football player, etc.? Well, Dollar for Dollar, the Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Grande might be the best fine Swiss watch ever.
The case is polished stainless steel, and as mentioned is a tonneau shape with huge claw style lugs, with dimensions of 51mm long (44.5mm excluding the lugs) by 36.5mm wide. Formed sapphire crystal in the front and round sapphire display crystal in the case back. Case back is screwed down with six screws.
Dial is silver with applied white gold ‘12’, ‘3’ and ‘9’, printed black hour markers and minutes chapter, white gold alpha style hands with black inlay, and date window at the bottom. The center of the dial has an area with Barleycorn guilloche.
Movement is the automatic winding Parmigiani Caliber 331 with 32 jewels, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and twin spring barrels. Power reserve is 55 hours.
Strap is black Hermes calf leather with a folding Parmigiani Fleurier steel deployant clasp.
