Description
A. Lange & Sohne is right up there in the top 2 or 3 watch manufacturers. It's a great story, too, how Walter Lange (grandson of the firm's founder) started the business back up after 40 years, after the original factory was bombed on the last day of World War II. The factory lay dormant and destroyed for decades, in the former East Germany, until the mid 1990s... and then BOOM... A. Lange & Sohne was back, leading the German watch renaissance. The Lange 1 is their signature model. Here is a Lange 1 in 18k yellow gold with champagne dial.
The Lange One's dial was absolutely unique when it debuted. Time is displayed in the small dial on the left side of the main dial. The roman numerals and hour markers are all applied. Lower right side of the dial has the constant seconds. Just above that is a retrograde power reserve indicator and just above that is the oversized date display, for which Lange & Sohne received a patent. The date is set with a corrector button on the upper left side of the case. The layout of the dial is singular, and the attention to detail in rendering it is amazing. There are two minuscule oxidation spots on the dial, but they are truly tiny. The quality is excellent, and the layout of the various functions is esoteric but intuitive and easy to read.
Movement is the mechanical winding Lange & Sohne Caliber L 901. This movement is very impressive, featuring: 53 jewels, power reserve of approximately 72 hours achieved by using two barrels which release power serially (whereas many other twin barrel constructions release power from one spring and then the other) resulting in a more uniform and accurate rate, screw mounted gold chatons, famed 3/4 "Glashutte" plate and abundant hand decoration. Because the decoration is done by hand, each watch emerges as a unique product. The engravers at Lange make a special effort on the balance cock, which is always exquisitely decorated.
Case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 38.5mm diameter and 10mm thick. The case is triparite and the various parts are finished with alternating polished and brushed surfaces. Sapphire crystals in front and on display back.
Strap is crocodile with 18k Lange tang buckle.
Retail price is $27,800. Watch is pre-owned, in new condition, with both boxes, open papers and instruction booklet.
