Description
If I were to give an industry achievement award for the best proportioned watch case, it would go to the John Schaeffer case from Audemars Piguet. As nice as the 18k gold cushion case is, though, it’s the fact that this is a minute repeater that makes it so valuable. Minutes Repetition is the most revered of all watch complications, and with good reason given the complexity and precision required to transmute the time from its analog form to an acoustic form. That, good readers, is an amazing thing when you think about it.
The 18k gold cushion shaped case measures 34mm wide by 40mm long (lug tip to lug tip) by 9.2mm thick. The front and display back crystals are both sapphire.
The case features a combination of brushed and polished finishes. Minute repeater activation slide is on the left side of the case.
Dial is white enamel with applied golden Breguet style numerals and browned Cathedral style hands. When is the last time you saw Cathedral hands and/or browned hands? That’s right; never. It’s details like these that differentiate the elite manufacturers from the rest of the pack. There is also a subsidiary seconds dial, also in a cushion shape, and with a blackened hand and seconds chapter.
Movement is the manual winding Audemars Piguet Caliber 2866, which is hand assembled, hand decorated and hand finished in AP’s dedicated complications atelier. This caliber has 34 jewels and is adjusted to heat, cold and in 5 positions. It also features an eccentric and attractive arrangement of bridges. The repeater hammers are visible through the display back.
Strap is a black Audemars Piguet crocodile with an 18k gold AP tang buckle.
Watch is mint with box and papers. The last published US Retail Price for this watch was approximately $200,000.
