Description
Rolex enthusiasts will recognize the case and bracelet on this watch from the OysterQuartz Datejust model. However, for a year or so before introducing the OysterQuartz Datejust, Rolex cased an automatic caliber in the same case and bracelet configuration. It is believed that no more than 500 reference 1530 watches were produced before the case and bracelet were co-opted for exclusive use in the OysterQuartz line.
Caliber is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions and for temperature. The movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer
The watch dates to 1977. Diameter is 35mm across and 42mm including the lugs. Thickness is 12.2mm. Crystal is sapphire. The smooth bezel is polished, as are the case sides, while the top of the lugs are brush finished. The screw down crown operates as it should.
The bracelet is noteworthy because it is integral to the case. The bracelet has 12 links and bears the reference number 17000. Because the bracelet is integral to the case, Rolex engraves the reference and serial numbers on the rear of the lugs. The serial number of this watch is 5171XXX.
Dial is silver with brushed sunburst silver dial, sloped flange with applied luminous dots (all intact), applied sticks. The dial has a rich champagne patina.
Given how rare and interesting the reference 1530 is, it has to offer the greatest value in the entire collectable vintage Rolex kingdom. This watch is in mint to mint plus condition.
