Description
Kurt Klaus is one of the most likeable figures in Swiss watch history. He’s the watchmaking genius behind the IWC Da Vinci. Mr. Klaus was so enamored with his job of designing and building complicated watch movements for IWC that even in the depths of World War II, when IWC cut its work week to a minimum number of hours (just to maintain its staff’s jobs), Kurt received special permission to work as much as he wanted because, well, he would have gone crazy with his obsession with watchmaking if he hadn’t had an outlet for all of that creative energy.

IWC saves the Da Vinci model name for its perpetual calendar chronographs. It saved the Kurt Klaus name for this special limited edition of 500 watches in rose gold.

The watch case is a massive 18k rose gold tonneau shape with dimensions of 51mm long by 43.5mm wide by 15.4mm thick. The crystal is sapphire. Chronograph pushers are contoured to match the curvature of the rounded case side. The case back features a portrait of Mr. Klaus in relief along with the watch’s limited edition number. The top surfaces of the watch are mirror polished while the case sides are brush finished. Anyone who has ever admired an IWC case in the metal knows that the fit and finish of their watches is outstanding.

The dial is impressive and, fortunately on a watch this complicated, legible. Silver in color, and with guilloche, the dial is also signed by Kurt Klaus. On the very top of the dial in very light printing is written “DA VINCI” and on the bottom “PERPETUAL CALENDAR”. The hour markers are applied rose gold and the hands are also rose gold. The 3 o’clock subdial displays the date; the 6 o’clock subdial displays the month and chronograph 12 hour totalizer scale; the 9 o’clock subdial displays the day and constant seconds; the subdial underneath 12 o’clock displays the moonphase and the chronograph minutes totalizer. Significantly, the year is also displayed in all four digits (extremely rare) just beneath the 7 o’clock hour marker.

Movement is the automatically winding IWC in house Caliber 79261.

Strap is brown IWC crocodile with 18k rose gold IWC deployant clasp.

Watch is new with box and papers. US Retail Price is $36,400 and even at the retail price this watch is a screaming bargain.
