Description
The reference 5514 Submariner was issued only to Comex divers and was never made available to the public. Rolex had a close working relationship with Comex, which lead to a lot of meaningful technical innovations. The 5514 is outfitted with a helium release valve, unlike other Submariner models. Comex divers sent their watches back to Rolex approximately every 6 months, for a checkup, upkeep and often times Rolex would upgrade the watch also.
This 5514 Submariner has the COMEX dial (100% guaranteed original and authentic), the “Certificat de Reception” from Comex to the diver who owned the watch which references the watch’s Comex serial number which is also engraved in large numbers on the case back of the watch, as well as a color photocopy of the diver’s Comex ID card (front and back) and his current French Passport.
Original stainless steel case is in excellent condition with marks on the steel but negligible metal loss from polishing. Original bezel moves smoothly in both directions. The original bezel insert is faded but clean. Triplock crown operates smoothly. Domed acrylic crystal. Please refer to picture of caseback below. The helium release valve is located in the center of the 9 o’clock side of the watch case.
Original untouched black dial is in excellent condition. “comex” is printed in the white box above the depth rating. There is some surface spotting on the dial, as can be expected when one considers that this watch was a tried and true tool watch for a professional Comex diver. Hands are in mint condition.
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1520 with 26 jewels and hacking seconds. Movement is clean and working fine.
Serial number of this watch is 5228XXX which dates production to 1977. The issuance letter from Comex to the receiving diver is dated 10.11.77 (which given the European date convention means November 10, 1977).
Bracelet is Rolex folded Oyster with 9 links and flip lock clasp (which is consistent with Rolex upgrading the watch’s parts during the frequent services).
Watch will be delivered with Comex Services “Certificat de Reception”, color copy of the diver’s ID card and color copy of the diver’s passport.
We are proud to offer this watch to all collectors. Authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
