Description
For its 125th year anniversary, the International Watch Company (IWC) chose the Portuguese as a special limited edition model to commemorate the occasion. They could not have chosen more wisely. The original Portuguese watch was made by special order for a Portuguese collector, who asked for his pocket watch’s movement to be cased in a wristwatch… and a legend was born. The Portuguese is truly a gorgeous watch. Nowadays, there are lots of Portuguese models. However, it is this reference 5441, which is the first modern Portuguese, which serves as the inspiration for all of today’s Portuguese models.
Like the original Portuguese watch, this watch contains a converted pocket watch movement, which IWC has maintained in production since 1928. This movement is the IWC manual winding Caliber 9828 with 19 jewels, adjusted to 5 positions, with small seconds hand, Breguet hairspring, swan neck fine regulator, shock protection,, beating at 18,800 vibrations per hour and with seconds stopping (“hacking” seconds). The top bridge has been engraved with “INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO. 1868 1993”.
It should be mentioned that many collectors consider the stainless steel Jubilee Portuguese their “Holy Grail”. One look at this watch reveals why.
The steel case is perfectly sized at 41.5mm diameter by 10.4mm thick. The front crystal is domed acrylic while the generously sized display back crystal is sapphire. The bezel and top surfaces of the watch are polished while the case sides are brush finished. The watch’s limited edition number is engraved on the 9 o’clock case side.
Dial is matte silver with applied rose gold Arabic numerals and embossed rose gold minutes chapter. The hands are beautiful rose gold leaf hands.
Strap is black IWC crocodile with steel IWC tang buckle.
The Jubilee Portuguese in stainless steel is a limited edition of 1000 pieces. This is watch number 89X. This watch is in mint+ original unpolished condition and is complete with box and papers.
