Description
Those nice folks over in Glashutte, Germany surely do know how to make a heck of a watch. The A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia annual calendar was introduced at the 2010 SIHH show, and as many Lange new model introductions are, it was the talk of the show. It’s that nice.
First of all, the watch is gorgeous. The designers nailed the aesthetics on this watch. The eye is immediately drawn to the balance and symmetry of the dial, followed by the color contrast between the silver dial and rose gold case, and then outward to the whole presentation. It might be the best looking calendar watch from any manufacture, ever.
Rose gold 18k case measures 38.5mm diameter by 10mm thick. The front and display back crystals are sapphire. Anyone who has ever held a Lange & Sohne watch in their hands knows that Lange cases are the best in the business. That said, and as beautiful as the fit and finish, and form, of the case is, this watch is all about the time and calendar display.
The matte silver dial has applied rose gold markers with a double marker at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions, with adjacent continuous minutes chapter with tiny rose gold dots next to the markers. The characteristic and patented Lange oversized date display is located beneath 12 o’clock. The subdials are sunken from the main dial surface, and then the center of the subdials are sunken further. The subdials also feature concentric guilloche and present the following information: at 3 o’clock are the months, at 6 o’clock the moonphase display and seconds, at 9 o’clock the days. The main hands are sword style in rose gold, while the left and right subdials have spade hands. The seconds hand is a blued baton hand. The date display is framed in rose gold. The quality and aesthetic balance of the dial are peerless.
Movement is the automatic winding A. Lange & Sohne Caliber L085.1 with Saxomat seconds hacking. The winding rotor is larger than a micro rotor and smaller than a central orbital rotor, and is gold with a platinum segment and is signed ‘A. LANGE & SOHNE’ and ‘SAX-O-MAT’. Jewel count is 43. All A. Lange & Sohne movements feature a hand decorated balance cock, making each movement a piece unique, essentially.
Strap is brown crocodile with rose gold Lange tang clasp.
Watch is brand new with box and papers.
