We love one-owner watches. These watches are one degree away from being brand new Rolex watches from yesteryear. The rare specimens that still have their original box and papers are very special. So… this vintage Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 with complete original box and papers set is the ultimate collectable 1655.
The 1655 is the first Explorer II, which Rolex designed as a watch for cave explorers. The orange hand revolves around the dial once in a 24 hour period, and is intended to help the cave explorer, in an absolute lack of light, keep his or her body in synch with day and night cycles. The 1655 is also known as the “Orange hand” and the “Steve McQueen” as the actor was photographed wearing this watch on occasion.
Few things turn on Rolex collectors like fat lugs, which this watch definitely has. Fat and uniform in width. Examing this watch closely, I don’t think it has ever been polished. The bezel still has its sharp edge and the case still has its factory beveled edges. Remarkably, for never having been polished, the case is in mint condition. Acrylic crystal. Screw down crown works fine. Measurements are 38mm diameter by 13.8mm thick.
Serial number 3913XXX dates production to 1973.
Original black dial is mint. Hands are all original. The luminous in the hands and hour markers match in patina.
Original movement is the 26 jewel automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570, which is adjusted to five positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Condition is clean and extra-mint. Movement is running strongly.
Bracelet is the Rolex Oyster 7836 with is the folded Oyster, with ‘280’ end links. This is the original bracelet with this watch. Bracelet has light stretch and is in excellent condition with 11 links.
