Description
Omega is one of the most pioneering and innovative watch brands. Developing and implementing new technologies is a specialty. No wonder, then, Omega was front and center in 1962 when 21 watch brands formed the Centre Electronique Horloger to develop a sophisticated elecroquartz movement. The prototype movement debuted in 1967. In 1968, a consortium of Swiss manufacturers pooled their resources and manufacturing capabilities to mass produce the calibers. Omega manufactured and supplied the micro-rotor that powers the hands. The first watches containing the Beta 21 movement arrived on the market in 1970.

This watch was introduced in 1970 in the Constellation model line (Omega’s top of the line model). The shape of the case was, at the time, appropriately futuristic, symbolic of the cutting edge technology ticking inside. Solid 18k gold with dimensions of 43mm long by 37.5mm wide. The case tapers in depth from the 12 o’clock side to the 6 o’clock side and measures from 14.7mm down to 12.2mm thick. Case construction is two pieces: flat back plate and massive upper case body with sapphire crystal. The crown is on the 9 o’clock side of the case. The back plate is secured to the case body with 4 screws. The entire case is brush finished.

The bracelet is integral to the case and is all 18k gold. Bracelet will fit up to an 8 inch wrist.

Dial is brush finished in gold color with applied Omega logo, red date wheel with white numbers in gold framed window at 6 o’clock, applied “OMEGA”, black hands for legibility with red seconds hand, and an inner minutes/seconds chapter. Dial text reads: ‘Constellation’ and ‘Electroquartz f8192 Hz’.

Omega named their Beta 21 the Caliber 1300, which has 13 jewels and quartz standardization.

The Beta 21 movements were almost always cased in large chunky futuristic looking gold watches. For a long time, the main appeal of the watches were the period 1970s look. However, collectors are now appreciating the rarity and historical importance of the Beta 21 movement watches. These watches are now in high demand among serious collectors.
