Description
First of all, we have never seen one of these sets, much less still absolutely new and complete almost 15 years after its release. Longines worked with Charles Lindbergh, the famous aviator, to design the Hour Angle watch, which told not only the time, but whose system of bezel and dial markings allows a pilot to navigate at a glance. Lindbergh actually wore an Hour Angle watch, which he designed and Longines built based on Lindbergh’s drawings and direction.
The set presented here was released in 1997. Longines made only 30 sets. The set is entirely complete. There is a signed Certificate of Origin and Authenticity from Walter von Kanel, who has been President of Longines since 1988 and who is on the Extended Group Management Board of Swatch since 1991. Mr. von Kanel started with Longines in 1969. The Certificate states: “Your watches of the Lindbergh Spirit collection, Nos: (the serial numbers of both watches are recorded in pen) are part of a limited edition of 30 packages celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first solo and non-stop trans-Atlantic flight achieved by Charles A. Lindbergh on May 21st 1927, from New York to Paris – Le Bourget…”
Set also includes large collectors box with metal top with picture of Lindbergh standing in front of his plane “Spirit of St. Louis”, Longines warranty booklet with open warranty card, Lindbergh Spirit Collection La montre Angle Horaire product instruction manual, the Certificate of Origin and Authenticity, and even the plastic display clasps to hold the watches on display inside the box.
The watches themselves have their original factory plastic sleeves with adhesive stickers (and one has its hangtag enclosed). The watches are brand new and unworn.
First watch is an hour angle chronograph with automatic winding, 18k and stainless steel case (41.2mm diameter by 14.8mm thick), and blue and red dial. The blue dial displays day and date, along with constant seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hour chronograph totalizer subdials. Crystals (up front and display back) are sapphire. The case back is engraved with information about the set, model number and serial number. The chronograph pushers and onion style crown are 18k, and there in 18k section in the bezel. This chronograph incorporates the Hour Angle navigational system.
Second watch is a pure Hour Angle navigational watch. Case is stainless steel and 18k gold with dimensions of 37mm diameter by 10mm thick. Dial is blue, red and silver with luminous hands, date at 3 o’clock, and incorporating the Hour Angle navigational system. Front and display back crystals are sapphire. Onion style crown is solid 18k gold.
Both watches are absolutely unworn new, have the original never worn blue Longines calf skin leather straps and original steel buckles.
This set is extremely rare, and has to be the only set remaining in the world in literally new condition.
