Description
The Patek Philippe reference 5050 was the first perpetual calendar wristwatch to break the $100,000 barrier in the collectors’ market. The 5050 inspired the dial design on one of Patek’s all-time great watches, the reference 5016 tourbillon perpetual calendar automatic. The 5016 and 5050 share the same presentation of the calendar displays and sweep seconds. The retrograde date display is especially interesting and a first on a perpetual calendar. The 5050 always has been and always will be the best Patek Philippe perpetual calendar wristwatch.
Case is polished 950 platinum with dimensions of 35.5mm diameter by 11.5mm thick. This case has very clean, traditional lines and is free of any design embellishments. The front crystal is slightly domed sapphire and the display back crystal is flat sapphire.
Dial is silver plated solid gold. Note that the Extract from the Archives included with the watch notes the dial color as “Opaline-White”, which appears as a silvery white. This dial color along with the platinum case is very stealthy, but there is a richness exuded which is as subtle as it is tasteful. The rare roman numeral hour markers (noted on the Extract) are applied and are white gold, along with white gold leaf style hands. The date is displayed on the retrograde scale which traverses the arc from 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock. Day is displayed in the aperture at 9 o'clock, leap year in the aperture under 12 o'clock, and month in the 3 o'clock aperture. Moonphase is displayed in the 6 o'clock subdial.
Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 315/136 with 31 jewels, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, 21k winding rotor, 46 hour power reserve and the Geneva Seal attestation of superiority.
Strap is a Patek brown crocodile with platinum Patek tang buckle.
Watch is in mint condition with second back, setting stylus, box, Extract from the Archives and papers.
