Description
In 1999, Lange & Sohne was the talk of the Basel Fair, and the toast of the watch world for months afterward, all for introducing the Datograph. After all, such amazing watches come along only rarely. Introduced first in platinum, but not perfected until they introduced the red gold case. Every time a Datograph comes in, we get a touch of Lange Fever. This is one nice watch.

The case on this Datograph is 18k red gold, with dimensions of 39.3mm diameter by 13.6mm thick. Date advancement button on left side of the case; sapphire front and display crystals. Case design and level of "fit & finish" on a Lange case is, simply, the best in the business. Each case is sufficiently massive to be impressive, but also understated enough to direct the wearer's gaze naturally toward the dial. And what a dial!

Dial is a solid silver plate with applied roman numeral hour markers and sticks, oversized date display framed in red gold and sunken grey subdials. Subdials provide constant seconds and chrtonograph 30 minute totalizer. Hands are alpha style and filled with luminous. There is an upper level to the dial, which is signed "A. LANGE & SOHNE" and has a tachymeter scale.

Movement is the manual winding Lange & Sohne L951.1 with 40 jewels, several of which are sunken into gold chatons, beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour, and featuring column wheel construction. This movement is incredibly well designed and constructed... just a perfect example of how a caliber can attain art status, and how humans can strive for emotion and beauty in their machines. Proudly signed "MADE IN GERMANY".

Please note that the Datograph is a flyback chronograph.

This watch is in new condition with box and papers dated May 2011 (Lange warranty in force through May 2013).
