Description
The Patent Pending Double Red Rolex Sea-Dweller is the coolest dive watch ever. Plain and simple. Rolex began working with Comex in the 1960s to offer a watch for saturation divers which would not pop its crystal off during the ascent. The Rolex engineers devised the helium escape valve. Offered as prototypes for a few years, the Sea-Dweller was first commercialized in the late 1960s as reference 1665. Trouble was, that Rolex started delivering the Sea-Dwellers with the new helium escape valve before they received the patent for their new invention. Hence, the case backs on these extremely rare watches were marked: (PATENT PENDING).
A Patent Pending Sea-Dweller is the Holy Grail of collectable dive watches. They are literally a snapshot of history and human ingenuity, not to mention a very valuable wristwatch and bonafide investment.
Original stainless steel case features a domed plastic crystal, original diver’s count-up timing bezel, screw-down crown and screw down case back. Dimensions are 40mm diameter by 15mm thick. Helium escape valve is in the center of the 9 o’clock side of the case.
Serial number 2128XXX dates production to 1969. Inside case back shows date code IV.67. The last three digits of the serial number are engraved in the center of the inside case back.
Original black dial has deep patina on the hour markers. This is a so called Double Red dial since the words “SEA-DWELLER SUBMARINER 2000” are in red. Hands may be replacement hands. Date display at 3 o’clock.
Original Rolex automatic winding Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Movement is clean and running well.
Bracelet is Rolex Oyster 93150 with 10 links and in clean, mint condition.
