Let’s start with just how incredible this watch is: Patek Philippe made only ten 5029s in 18k rose gold. This is watch “Number One” (which is how its serial number is engraved, in cursive). Patek made the ultra-low production limited edition 5029 minute repeater with Officer’s case in 1997, to mark the occasion of their new factory in Geneva.
Featuring a strong resemblance to a pocket watch, with its knurled crown and hinged hunter style case back, Patek Philippe reserves the Officer’s watch case for special watches. And this is an extraordinary Officer’s case as well, as it was hand made by John Pierre Hagman, Patek Philippe’s and Geneva’s most celebrated and revered case maker. Mr. Hagman is so important and highly regarded that Patek has a “JPH” hallmark used on the cases that he makes. The hallmark is imprinted on the inside of the hinged case back. Solid 18k rose gold case measures 35mm width from top to bottom and 37.5mm in width from side to side. Domed sapphire crystal in front and flat sapphire display back crystal. Another characteristic of the Officer’s case is the long lugs with screws. The hinge for the case back extends organically from the crown shoulders. Repeater activation slide is on the nine o’clock case side.
Philippe Stern believes that rose gold produces the best repeater tone due to the porosity of the copper alloys. In fact, Mr. Stern reserved the rose gold minute repeaters for his best customers. Patek customers likewise consider the rose gold repeaters to have the best tone and consider them the most desirable repeaters.
Dial is silvered, but so light in color that it appears white in most lighting. The applied rose gold Breguet numerals, embossed rose gold dot minutes chapter, and rose gold pomme hands are just killer nice against the light dial. Subsidiary seconds dial.
Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber R 27 PS with 22k micro-rotor construction, also featuring 39 jewels, Gyromax balance adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and in five positions and stamped with the Geneva Seal.
