Description
You are looking at one of Rolex’s most collectable and rarest watches. Made from only 1949 to 1952 and overall very low production of around 200 watches. This is watch number 17X with serial number 676XXX dating it to circa 1950. So many of these 8171s had their dials refinished that there are only a handful that still have totally original dials like this watch – an original untouched dial.
Original solid 18k gold case still in remarkably mint condition with sharp edges massive undiminished lugs. The top surfaces of the watch (bezel and tops of lugs) are polished while the case sides are brush finished. The case back is brushed around the edge and polished in the center. This watch has been polished maybe once in its life, as the serial number and Rolex crown are easily observed and legible on the outside surface of the case back. The inside surface of the case back notes the model as 8171 and the watch’s actual number in overall 8171 production (# 17X). Domed plastic crystal. Dimensions are rather massive for 1950 at 38mm diameter by 13.2mm thick.
Original untouched silver dial has taken on a champagne color patina. There is some spotting and signs of age consistent with its 62 years, but not enough to detract from its beauty and most important of all it’s never been altered. Dial features applied golden hour markers, date around the periphery of the dial, apertures for Day and Month, applied small Rolex crown, moonphase in blue with gold moon and stars and subsidiary seconds running around the circumference of the moon phase with its own seconds chapter with guilloche. Original golden sword hands and original blue-tipped date hand.
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 10 ½’’’ with 18 jewels, Superbalance, self-compensating balance spring. Movement is clean and running.
Strap is high quality crocodile with Rolex buckle.
This mint condition and original Rolex 8171 is an outstanding opportunity for Rolex collectors and/or a wonderful choice if you simply want a gorgeous vintage Rolex watch for daily wear.
