Description
The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 was the first Explorer II. It has a unique look in the history of Rolex watches, with its orange colored 24 hour second timezone hand, steel bezel with 24 hour scale and the hands and dial on the 1655 are unique to this model. The Explorer II was originally designed for cave explorers, who would lose their sense of daytime and nighttime, hence the 24 hour hand.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 14mm thick. The Mark 2 bezel has an engraved and brush finished 24 hour scale with black numbers. Screw down crown is operating perfectly. Acrylic crystal with cyclops. Case is near mint with fat lugs. Inside case back is engraved 1655 and serial number 4063XXX dates production to 1974.
Original untouched Mark 2 black dial is in perfect condition. Original, organic and uniform patina on all luminous including the original hands. This is a white-out 1655, as there is no hint that the 24 hour hand on this watch was ever orange. Given the large amount of luminous in the 24 hour hand and its perfect match for all the other luminous on the dial and other hands, and the whiteness of the hand itself we must conclude that this hand has not faded from original orange but instead left the factory as a genuinely rare white 24 hour hand. Date display at 3 o’clock.
Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex caliber 1575 with 26 jewels and adjusted to five positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Condition is clean and running.
Bracelet is a Rolex Oyster bracelet reference 78360 with non-flip lock clasp in mint condition.
