Description
The story of this watch starts out with Horometrie S.A., which is a Swiss company that owns Richard Mille and the private-label Swiss watch firm Valgine. Audemars Piguet bought into the fledgling company in the early 2000s, gaining Horometrie S.A. access to Renaud et Papi, Audemars’ owned super complicated movement division. Ah, synergy.

So here you have the nicest Audemars Piguet wristwatch ever: the Royal Oak Concept Carbon Tourbillon Chronograph. Elite would be an understatement. AP re-thought everything with this watch. Let’s start with the movement: First of all, watch collectors will recognize the three position indicator H-N-R at the bottom of the dial from Richard Mille’s movements. Set by the crown, this shows if the movement is in winding, setting or neutral mode. Another highlight is the 10 day power reserve and its construction from an array of fascinating and advanced materials including a mainplate of green aluminum that is sapphire blasted and eloxed. Bridges are nickel silver with black PVD and power-reserve cone is coated with amorphous carbon to make it all but impervious to wear. The visible from the front tourbillon bridges and chronograph scales are made from hand-drawn polished steel. Pretty much everything else in the movement is rendered from carbon and then treated with a special coating for both aesthetic and mechanical enhancement (mostly resistant to wear/reduction of friction).

Technical features of the movement are: tourbillon, chronograph with linear display, ten 10 day power reserve with hand-winding, 34 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, balance spring with Breguet-Philipps curve and comprised of 384 individual parts.

Case is compressed carbon which is simultaneously very hard and very light. It also looks very cool with its characteristic light and dark grey composition. Generously proportioned at 44mm diameter by 18.7mm thick, is also has a ceramic bezel, crown and chronograph pushers.

Properly speaking, there is no dial as this is a skeletonized face. It is much more thought out and balanced than most complicated watch dials, however. Time is shown with the large skeletonized hands and there is a minutes and seconds chapter on the flange. Power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock; linear chronograph display fills the right side of the face; the three positional H-N-R indicator is at 6 o’clock; tourbillon is visible at 9 o’clock.

Watch is indiscernible from new with booklets, special collectors box with carbon fiber look, and second strap. US Retail Price of this watch is $309,800.
