Description
It won’t be long before the reference 16520 Daytona chronographs are considered vintage watches. As nice as the new Rolex movement Daytonas are, I have to say there is something very special about these older Zenith based Daytonas. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, except to say that the 16520s are starting to look “vintagy” I guess… which is to say they look beautiful. This particular A serial watch is from 1999 and is literally one of the last Zenith based Daytonas before the change-over to Rolex movements starting in 2000.
Case is stainless steel with dimensions of 40mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Units Per Hour bezel engraving with scale from ‘400’ to ‘60’, sapphire crystal, screw down Triplock crown and screw down chronograph pushers which ensure water resistance to 100 meters on this legendary Rolex sports watch.
This watch winds smoothly, runs great, and the chronograph pushers reset the chronograph hands to their zero positions crisply and accurately.
Movement is the Rolex Caliber 4030 which is actually a Rolex modified Zenith El Primero base caliber. If one ever needed proof that Rolex is a perfectionist, they need look no further than Rolex's selection of and modifications to the El Primero. The Zenith El Primero was, and is, recognized as being the best large series production chronograph caliber made. Rolex used the El Primero in their Daytona watches, but not before doing extensive upgrades and refinements. The movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.
Original white dial with applied luminous hour markers and hands, red "Daytona", and 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph totalizer subdials with black chapter rings. The dial and hands are in perfect condition.
Original bracelet is stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet with zero stretch.
