Description
Here is a first ‘A’ series Royal Oak from 1972 designed by the recently deceased Gerald Genta. Mr. Genta also designed the Patek Philippe Nautilus and other legendary luxury sport watches, but the Royal Oak was his first spectacular success and was the first luxurious sports watch. This watch is number 37X, placing it amongst the earlier production of the reference 5402 A series Royal Oak watches, of which fewer than 1000 are believed to be manufactured.

It’s the octagonal bezel that defines the Royal Oak, with its exposed and functional white gold screws. This case is solid 18k gold and stainless steel and measures 39.5mm wide by 47mm long by 7.4mm thick. Crystal is sapphire. The white gold screws reappear in the case back, and are the structural key to this case.

Dial is 100% original and untouched. The ‘A’ series watches are denoted by the applied ‘AP’ on the dial being located above 6 o’clock, as opposed to all of the later Royal Oaks, where the ‘AP’ is located at 12 o’clock. This original anthracite grey dial with Clous de Paris engraving has applied golden baton hour markers and original gold baton hands. Date window at 3 o’clock.

Movement is the automatic winding Audemars Piguet Caliber 2121 with 36 jewels, balance adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and in 5 positions and with 21k gold winding rotor.

The Royal Oak’s design also features a first: the integral bracelet which tapers toward the clasp. Clasp has a fold-over safety lock.

While stainless steel ‘A’ series Royal Oaks rarely appear in the market, steel and gold examples never appear. This mint condition example is quite rare, all original, and highly collectable.
