Description
Sometimes, trying to describe the color of a color change dial is like those wine labels, where someone has discerned that the Chardonnay in question has “overtones of ripe pears, late fall harvest apples and a hint of caramel”. This ghost grey dial does, in fact, have a hint of teal in its lightening grey, which in turn is lightening from its original black color. The fact that the original bezel insert has faded to the exact color of the dial is a priceless bonus.

This is a vintage Rolex Submariner model 1680 in solid 18k gold with original everything including the 18k Oyster bracelet and even the original box and papers. The 1680 was the first Submariner to have a date display and also the first Submariner to be offered in gold. Case measures 40mm diameter by 14.5mm thick. Plastic crystal. Serial number 2191XXX dates production to 1969 which matches the date code on the bracelet of ‘4 69’. Papers are dated August 10, 1969.

Original untouched color change dial now faded (along with the original bezel insert) to grey. The golden hour markers and original golden hands look fantastic against the grey dial.

Original Chronometer certified automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to temperature and in 5 positions. Movement is clean and running.

Original 18k gold riveted Rolex Oyster bracelet with 12 links and ‘4 69’ date code.

Watch is mint and, remarkably, has its original Rolex box and papers which you never see with early gold 1680s.
